Galway Film Centre invites community, social and voluntary groups from around Galway city and county to take part in an exciting project that will enable them to make their own documentary. Funded principally by The Arts Council, Galway City Council, and Galway County Council, this project is now in its fourteenth year, during which time Galway Film Centre have built up an impressive track record of giving people from a wide range of backgrounds access to the art-form of documentary making. The project aims to facilitate community groups to take an active part in the filmmaking process, to develop and create a short documentary in order to tell their own story.
Groups hoping to participate in the projects should have a unique voice, which encapsulates their community, tradition, spirit, lifestyle, views and culture. The selected groups must be able to make a significant time commitment over the summer months. The program is however, very flexible and can be tailored to suit the availability of selected group members.
ID Projects aims to document a broad range of issues and subjects in society by empowering groups to tell their own stories. Galway Film Centre gives professional advice and support to four groups, two from the city and two from the county, throughout the entire production process. All equipment and technical advice will be provided and there will be no financial cost for the selected groups. The audio-visual medium gives people immediate access to a multitude of skills and is a powerful tool in enabling communities to explore, develop and express their individual and collective creativity.
In 2013, Bádóirí an Cladaig, DRA Youth Theatre Project, Coiste Turasóireachta Cheantar na nOileán, Orion’s Belt and the Galway Simon Women’s Project participated in the scheme and screened their films in the Town Hall Theatre, Galway.
To date over sixty groups have participated and successfully completed their own films based on the common theme of identity. The selection of groups for the ID Film Project is on a competitive basis so it is advisable to contact Galway Film Centre or attend one of our Information Evenings for advice on the application process.
