The Recreation & Amenity Department wishes to notify the public of works that are to commence on the 11th of February for approximately two weeks.
Merlin Woods formerly part of the Estate of the National Forest Service and later Coillte was planted in the 1970's & 80's with a crop of commercial Spruce Plantations. The crop never became commercially successful and was transferred with the lands to Galway County Council in the 1980's. With later City Borough boundary changes Merlin Woods came into the ownership of Galway City Council (then Galway Borough Council).
Galway City Council as part of the greater City's Parks & Biodiversity strategies for the City have on an ongoing basis removed and thinned out part of the Spruce Crop. Spruce is a heavy shade bearing tree with minimal undergrowth and limited flora and Fauna The City Council wishes therefore to advise that works will be occurring shortly in a section of the wood near Caislean Thorlaigh Estate to thin out a percentage of the existing spruce trees.
The works are intended to remove trees which are in poor health and structure and to make space and light available to implement the introduction of a greater diversity of trees, plant flora and fauna.
