February Mid-Term

calendar yellow man (100 x 100)The February school mid-term is next week with Secondary schools closed from 11–15 Feb incl & Primary schools closed from 14-15 Feb with an option to extend to a 5 day break. 
There's lots happening over the mid-term to keep the kids (and you!) occupied.  
 Check out our February Mid-term section for Events going on around the country, Family Breaks to take them away for a few days and Camps for those that want to do art, sport, horse riding or cookery!

Action Plan on Bullying Launched!

Action-Plan-On-Bullying-13 120The new Action Plan on Bullying was launched last week by the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D. and the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald T.D.
The Plan sets out twelve actions to help prevent and tackle bullying in primary and second level schools. The report makes it clear that preventing and tackling bullying requires support from parents and wider society and is not a problem schools can solve alone.

Positive mental health and suicide prevention in post-primary schools

New national Guidelines on promoting positive mental health and suicide prevention in post-primary schools published.  The Guidelines provide a framework, with information for schools and agencies supporting schools, on how to address issues of mental health promotion and suicide prevention. 

The Guidelines are for all members of the school community, boards of management and in-school management teams. They will also be useful for the statutory and non-statutory partners, parents, parents’ associations, students, student councils, health and other personnel who are seeking an understanding of how to best work in and with schools.

School Patronage Survey closes Friday 8th February

school bag and shoes crop (120 x 83)Parents in 38 areas across the country have been asked by the Minister for Education through an online survey for their input on the kind of school they would like for their children.  If the responses to this survey suggest a preference for an expanded choice, the Department of Education will begin talks with the existing bodies about a change of patronage.

Guidelines for Developing Textbook Rental Schemes in Schools Launched

schoolbooks (100 x 150)Last week, the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, TD, launched new “Guidelines for Developing Textbook Rental Schemes in Schools” The Guidelines provide practical advice to primary and post-primary schools on how rental schemes can be established and operated. 

Schools which already have rental schemes can save parents up to 80% of the cost of buying new books.


Children to be FREE at weekends in Feb, March, April on LUAS !!

It's been announced that children can travel for free on the LUAS at weekends in February, March and April. 

The offer covers both Luas lines and is available on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. The children must be travelling with an adult who has a valid luas ticket.
