Following a very successful “Framing the Question” “Theatre of the Oppressed¡¨ Facilitation skills training course with Julian Boal in November 2012, ALâ, in conjunction with Clarecare, are pleased to offer another five day intensive “Theatre of the Oppressed¡¨ Facilitation skills training course.

Rainbow of Desire

All improvisation is a quest, a process of discovery.

This five day national course will explore “Rainbow of Desire” techniques from Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed (www.theatreoftheoppressed.org/), warm up and improvising techniques which  concentrate on exploring the internal oppressions that people carry in their heads.

The techniques explored will help clarify the questions we may need to ask ourselves. What oppressions are submerged in a person’s internalised voices and responses? How can we expose and confront these oppressions and the conflicting desires that underlie them? How can we unpick everyday actions, rituals, words and history that enable oppression to happen?

In Theatre of the Oppressed the scene, the stage, becomes the rehearsal space for real life.

Who would benefit from this workshop?

* This course provides Professional Development for therapists working in the area of mental well-being and personal development. Action methods from Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) are applicable in a wide range of therapeutic settings including addiction, bereavement, and family trauma..

* People working in the area of social justice. TO provides a rehearsal for change.

* Community development workers who want to expand their personal and organisational drama, facilitation, and group skills

* Youth and community workers and teachers. Engaging with diverse and sometimes conflicting roles through the various rehearsal techniques of TO provides experiential learning which cannot be delivered from the whiteboard or the overhead.

Cost and Payment

This course is self funding so regretfully ALâ  cannot offer any reductions of cost.

The course cost, including facilities, facilitation and other supports, is based on 5 day participation therefore full attendance is expected.

Cost is £á310 per person including lunch – Places limited and need to be booked by February 10th 2013. For people who will need to stay overnight for the duration of the course a special discounted price has been organised with the Rowan Tree Hostel in Ennis which is the location of the course.

Augusto Boal

Augusto Boal (16 March 1931 – 2 May 2009) was a Brazilian theatre director, writer and politician. He was the founder of Theatre of the Oppressed, a theatrical form originally used in radical popular education and literacy movements in Latin America. In 1971 Boal was arrested, tortured, and eventually exiled to Argentina by the military regime, where he published his muchacclaimed Theatre of the Oppressed (1973). Boal developed a theatrical method based on Pedagogy of the Oppressed, a book by his fellow Brazilian, educator and writer Paulo Freire, a friend and father figure for Boal.

Boal’s method, which has been implemented in communities across the world, seeks to transform audiences into active participants in the theatrical experience, and thereby rehearse active transformation of their own lives and communities.

Tutor - Gavin Crichton

Gavin Crichton (www.activeinquiry.co.uk) is a drama worker, director, lecturer and Artistic Director of ACTive INquiry. After completing a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre Arts. Gavin worked as a freelance artist before taking a post as research assistant at The Centre for Community Arts Research and Practice at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, where he helped to set up and run the community programme and artist training programme at the Gateway Theatre.

Gavin has worked in number of community settings and has been lucky enough to attend a number of workshops run by Augusto Boal. He is member of the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Organisation and the International Theatre of the Oppressed Organisation.

ALâ

ALâ, founded in 2004 is a fully inclusive personal social and community development organization, catering for adults of all abilities, nationalities and ethnic groups, which mainly uses Theatre of the Oppressed (T.O) methodologies as developmental tools. It is a not for profit organization, run by participants, with Charitable Status. Each year ALâ presents a show developed in weekly community workshops. In 2012 ALâ presented Granuaile, from the pages of history to a full house in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway.

ALâ have run T.O. projects in conjunction with other social and community development organizations in Galway and nationally. Its overall objective is to help organizations and individuals develop their own independent projects. To achieve this ALâ have been running T.O. facilitation skills training courses over the past four years. They use the best available facilitators in Europe including Annette Tierney, Adrian Jackson (London), Gavin Crichton (Edinburgh) and Julian Boal (Paris & Brazil).
